DAYTON, Ohio -- The owner of Jay's Seafood Restaurant died while hiking and taking pictures in California's Death Valley National Park.

Jeff Mullenhour, deputy coroner investigator for the Inyo County Coroners office, said Saturday that an autopsy showed Mr. Haverstick collapsed and passed away in the desert as a result of the temperature and his existing medical conditions.

Mr. Haverstick had a history of heart problems and had bypass surgery, according to the coroner.

Park spokesman Terry Baldino said a California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the body of Jay Haverstick, 69, on Wednesday, a day after a travel companion reported him missing.

The park spokesman said it appears Haverstick may have gotten lost on a day when the temperature reached 112 degrees in Death Valley.

Haverstick was an avid outdoor photographer and had ventured out to take pictures of a sand dune area.
