Third Case Of Bacterial Meningitis In Logan Co.

Health officials confirm a third case of bacterial meningitis in Logan County, and the newest case involves an 11-month-old baby.

Experts said one adult female victim died just two days after giving birth. The other woman also gave birth last Thursday and is still in critical condition after contracting bacterial meningitis.

Health officials said both women checked into Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine last Thursday to give birth. Just hours after delivering their babies, both women were transported to the ICU then on to Riverside Hospital in Columbus when their conditions worsened. Susan Finch Ryan Simpson, 30, died Saturday.

However, Logan County's Health Comissioner said there is no need for the public to panic.

Boyd Hoddinott said, "I understand the public's concern. By the way, we get one case a year and all of a sudden we get three cases in the same weekend. My advice is these are not contagious diseases and they have nothing to fear from this."

Bacterial meningitis has different forms. One type, which is the most serious, is spreadable from person to person and is called Niceria Bacterial Meningitis. The three people in Logan County did not have Niceria.

Mary Rutan Hospital spokesperson Mandy Goble said, "Our hearts go out to the patients and families, what they have gone through and are going through."

Hospital officials said the only common link between the two women is that they both received spinal anesthesia.

Both of the newborns are doing fine.

The 11-month-old baby who is sick with bacterial meningitis has no connection to the two adult women who contracted the disease.

The baby was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital, but only after the child became sick.
