Saved By The Belt Near Sidney

Both occupants of a vehicle possibly owe their lives to the seatbelts they were wearing Saturday evening along southbound Interstate 75 just north of Sidney in Shelby County.

The driver lost control of what appeared to be a brand new Jeep sports utility vehicle. The SUV skidded across the southbound lanes, into the grassy median, flipping "numerous times," said Trooper Jeremy Morris from the Piqua Post of the State Highway Patrol.

The vehicle then continued across the northbound lanes without hitting any on-coming traffic and came to rest on its wheels off the highway.

The passenger, Albert Rahn, 25, Cincinnati, was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney for treatment of minor injuries. The driver, Ashley Kempher, 24, Findlay, first refused treatment at the scene, she was later taken to the hospital by a state trooper.

The jeep was demolished. It had 30 day tags on it indicating that the owner had just recently purchased the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.

Traffic was down to one lane through the crash scene for about an hour.
