Lightning Causes Darke Co. Farmhouse Fire

Firefighters from all over Darke County and western Miami County responded to the report of a house fire early Friday morning at 7632 Folkerth Road at the intersection of State Route 571 southeast of Greenville.

Flames were coming from the roof when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly before 3 a.m.

There were no reports of any injuries.

There were storms in the area with heavy rain and lightning prior to the fire. Investigators said lightning struck could be to blame.

Route 571 was closed to traffic during the height of the fire. The farmhouse of Rick and Jill Thompson was heavily damaged.

Early estimates put damage to the house at close to $200,000. The house was 109 years old.

Authorities said a firefighter was treated for an injured shoulder and released.

Firefighters from Gettysburg, Bradford, Pitsburg, Greenville Twp., Versailles, Laura, Ansonia, Arcanum, New Madison, Covington, Pleasant Hill and Ludlow Falls.
