Police: Vandals Burn Car With Firecrackers

Posted: 3:55 pm EDT July 2, 2009Updated: 4:31 pm EDT July 2, 2009

The Fourth of July holiday is right around the corner, but someone in Xenia started to celebrate early, and did a lot of damage using fireworks.

Officers responded toe a home on New Mexico Drive after a car was intentionally set on fire.

Ben Tran said, “We were woken up by a police officer pounding on our window and back door.”

The officer told Tran and his wife, Kelly, that their car was on fire and that their house could be next, and told them to get out of their home.

Tran said, “My first thought was, how could this have happened?”

Police said they believe a firecracker may be the cause of the fire. That is because officers found one in another damaged vehicle down the street.

Capt. Scott Anger said, “This wasn’t your normal bottle rockets, larger fireworks, purposely put in the car.”

Police said a couple of other cars were also broken into, but looking at the melted siding on the side of the Trans’ home, Ben and his wife said they are lucky.

Tran said, “If it wasn’t for the fast response of the firefighters soaking down the garage, that definitely would have gone up, spread to the attic, spread to the house.”

Police are hoping that someone saw something. If you have any information about this case, contact Xenia police at 372-9901.
