CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Police said a man was injured after he was run over by a golf cart on the campus of Cedarville University on Friday.

News Center 7 spoke with police and fire crews at the scene. They described it as a freak accident.

Greg Rickey, of Germantown, was driving on Route 72 and saw a man lying under a golf cart in front of Cedarville University.

“You could tell he couldn’t breathe, so we just took the pressure off the cart,” Rickey said.

Police and fire crews responded minutes later. They said the victim is in charge of the grounds on the university’s campus, and he and some other workers had been using the golf cart to haul mulch.

Chief Chris Gillaugh said, “He asked the guy to back up, his foot slipped off the brake and ran over the top of the man putting down the mulch.”

Medics arrived and treated the man at the scene.

Gillaugh said, “He keeps the place looking really nice, super nice guy, just a freak accident.”

Officials at the university said the guy who was injured has worked there for more than 20 years and they are going to do whatever they can to help him and his family.
