DAYTON, Ohio -- The owners of Tukens Orchard and Farm Market in West Alexandria, Mary and Frank Hora, said more people than every have been snatching up pumpkins.Every year, more and more people around the Miami Valley buy pumpkins as the weather starts turning cooler.“Pumpkins are really key to everyone’s decorating schemes in the autumn,” said Mary Hora. “It starts in early September and goes all the way until Halloween.”The Horas pick out their pumpkin seeds in January, which means they must plan ahead to make sure they’re stocked with enough pumpkins to meet the soaring demand.“I have never grown more pumpkins than I have this year,” said Frank Hora. “We have slowly increased because the demand has increased.”“It seems like year after year, we always grow ore and more pumpkins and we never seem to have enough,” said Mary Hora. This year, thanks to abundant rainfall, people will find some pretty hefty pumpkins.“This year’s crop of pumpkins is unique,” said Frank Hora. “With all this moisture we’re having a bumper crop in size. However, some of the moisture concerns have kept some of the pumpkins from coming in, since they’re not as good of quality.”People will still find plenty of pumpkins for sale though. Since, pumpkins are one of the areas most valuable vegetable crops Tukens made sure to grow enough to sell only their best to their growing customer base.
