Miami Valley Volunteers Make Difference

DAYTON, Ohio -- Dozens of organizations and hundreds of volunteers in the Miami Valley set out to make a difference on Saturday.Saturday was Make a Difference Day in Ohio. USA Weekend Magazine and the Points of Light Institute founded make a Difference Day in 1992. It is the largest national day designated to helping others.The local event was created to encourage Ohioans to participate in the national Make a Difference Day. Since the local event began in 2000, Ohio has led the nation in the number of service projects.Volunteer groups from the city of Kettering were among the groups that participated in Saturday's event. Kettering’s service project involved applying storm drain markers to remind Kettering residents that whatever flows into the storm sewer goes straight to area rivers and streamsStudent and staff from Chaminade Julienne in Dayton teamed up with organizations from the University of Dayton, Sinclair Community College and Wright State University. Together the groups volunteered at 15 different service sites.The Troy-Miami County Public Library in Troy got a new look at no cost to the library, thanks to Make A Difference Day.The library got new landscaping as one of ten projects volunteers undertook on Saturday throughout the city.More than 125 volunteers tackled those jobs that also included painting, trash pick-up around the city, and planting trees.Nationally, more than 3 million people participated in Make A Difference Day.
