Early Voting Problems Corrected

DAYTON, Ohio -- Several poll workers arrived late in the Dayton area for today's election, resulting in delays of up to 15-minutes in the opening of a couple of voting sites.In Centerville, several poll workers were late and several voters left without voting. However, all three voters said they would return later.At one Dayton poll, an encoder used to activate a voting machine didn't work, so paper ballots were used until a new encoder was 1installed.Montgomery County Board of Elections Director Steve Harsman says no voters were turned away.Harsman said trouble shooters were on hand this morning to fix any problems.An encoder used to activate a machine in the Wilkinson Plaza building on West Fifth Street that didn't work so they used paper balThey have paper ballots at polling places to deal with such glitches, Harsman said.A power outage in Vandalia early this morning knocked out electrical power to about a third of the city but did not stop voting because the machines have a battery backup that lasts five hours, according to Harsman.There are 548 polling places in Montgomery County. Greene and Warren County reported no problems with the polls upon opening.The polls opened this morning at 6:30 a.m. They close at 7:30 p.m.By the end of tonight voters will decide if Ohioans want casinos, who will be the Mayor of Dayton, and if several local library levies pass.More than 60 tax issues and more than 800 candidates are on ballots across the Dayton area.
