NEW CARLISLE, Ohio -- Authorities in Clark County said a 911 call put two local schools on lockdown Thursday morning and sent deputies rushing to the scene.

The caller stated that three armed men were walking into Park Layne Elementary School around 9:30 a.m.

Investigators said the series of events put school personnel and parents on edge as deputies tried to determine what was going on. In the end, the incident was a false alarm and cost time and money for local authorities.

The caller to 911 said, “I just seen three armed guys walk to an elementary school and looked like they had guns on them.”

Deputies said the caller told them that he was at a gas station across the street from the school and watched as two men, dressed in black, walked inside with an assault rifle and another walked around back.

Sheriff Gene Kelly said, “We immediately made contact with the office and the school went into lockdown.”

Deputies said no one inside the school saw anything and a search of the building turned up nothing.

“In this span of time, a call was received to school administration that a suspicious male, dressed in black clothing, was across the street," Kelly said.

Investigators then put Medway Elementary, which is a few miles away, into lockdown, too. School officials thought that they spotted a man in dark clothing in the woods behind the school.

Deputies converged onto the area, and once again it was a false alarm. Now, they are trying to find the man who made the calls.

Kelly said they do have information on who the caller might be, despite the fact that he either hung up or his battery died before the dispatcher could get his full information.

As the investigation continues, authorities said, the caller could face criminal charges of inducing panic.

Deputies said the man who was found in the woods was arrested. He was was not armed, but was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant.
