Wife Of Soldier Describes Ft. Hood Shooting

Posted: 7:33 pm EST November 6, 2009

The wife of an Army soldier said she listened in horror as her husband's cell phone picked up the screams and gunfire from the deadly shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

Melissa Berry of Mason, Ohio, said her husband, Sgt. Joshua Berry, called her Thursday afternoon from inside the Army base's processing center, where authorities said Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire.

Berry said her husband blurted out, "Honey, they're shooting in the room I'm in. I love you." After that, Berry said her husband fell silent but stayed on the line as she heard the chaos that followed. Her husband wasn't injured.

Berry said Friday that the victims' families need support and prayers. She's taking a flight to Texas on Saturday to pick up her husband, who was previously scheduled to transfer to Fort Knox, Ky.
