A teenager was killed and two others injured in a mid-afternoon crash Sunday at the intersection of State Route 48 and Sugar Grove Road, between Pleasant Hill and Covington in Miami County.

Dead at the scene was Robert Lyle, 16, of Covington, who was the driver of the car. Lyle was a sophomore at Covington High School. His passenger, Zachary Baumgardner, 16, of near Covington, was flown aboard CareFlight from the scene to Miami Valley Hospital in serious condition. Baumgardner is a junior at the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School in Piqua.

Deputies said that Lyle had only had his driver's license since Oct. 14.

The boys were in a car that pulled from a stop sign on Sugar Grove Rd. and into the path of a southbound pickup truck driven by Tammy Newman, 44, of Laura. She was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center near Troy for treatment of minor injuries.

According to deputies, Newman was traveling on Route 48 and indicated there was nothing she could do to avoid the collision. Newman had just left the Covington Community Care Center where she works minutes before the crash. She was on her way home.

Deputies don't know where the teens were coming from or headed for at the time of the crash, which was reported at 3:09 p.m.

All three individuals were wearing seatbelts, according to Sgt. Lee McCartney.

Route 48 was closed to traffic for several hours as Miami County deputies conducted their investigation. Deputies said they did not have any witnesses to the crash.
