Drug Overdose Keeps Children Hospitalized

Two children remain at a local hospital 24 hours after police said they overdosed on prescription drugs.

Children Services told News Center 7 that the family has a history of problems similar to what was discovered in their Dayton home on Thursday.

Late Thursday afternoon, four children were rushed to a local hospital after their mother found two of them unconscious.

Officers said they believe that the children overdosed on their mother’s prescription drugs and now Children’s Services and police are investigating.

The children range in age from 5 to 10. Police said it was the two youngest boys who, are 5 and 7, were in the worst condition when medics took them to Children’s Medical Center.

The entire family was at the hospital waiting while the two boys were being treated.

Sherry Roth of Dayton, said, “The mom came out on the porch, screaming hysterically ‘help me, help me, help me.’”

Roth, who is a nurse’s assistant, ran across the street and tried to help the two boys who were struggling to breath. Within minutes, medics arrived at the scene.

According to a police report, the house was in disarray and had deplorable conditions. It appears that the house also had exposed electrical wiring.

Ann Stevens with Children's Services said, "We have concerns about supervision since the children had access to prescription bottles."

Authorities also said that the family was investigated in 2008, 2005 and 2003 for neglect. However, no charges were ever filed in those cases.

Children's Services said it is working with the family in a long-term program to make sure that the children are cared for properly.

News Center 7 learned that the two boys were upgraded to fair and good condition.
