New Casino Issue On May Ballot

For the third time in three statewide elections, residents of Ohio will see casino gambling back on the ballot.

However, this time, Ohioans will be deciding where one of the casinos will be located.

If the issue passes, the new casino would be built on the site of an old Delphi factory in Columbus.

When voters approved a casino for Columbus, that ballot issued mandated that it would be built near the city’s downtown, but the city wanted it moved elsewhere. So, they took the issue back to the ballot.

A new campaign is under way and is run by Springfield native Lisa Griffin. She said, “Issue 2 is simply an address change. It allows it to be built on the Dephi plant site and be part of the revitalization of the west side.”

West Columbus has been hurting ever since the Delphi plant closed. Business owners like Chris Haydocy said putting the casino at the site will be a big boost.

Haydocy said, “It’s all about the jobs and bringing jobs in and getting good jobs to revitalize the area up and down.”

If Issue 2 fails, the casino will still be built, but at the original site. If it passes, it will be built on the old Delphi site near the outer belt, which is closer to the Miami Valley, especially Springfield, where it has generated some interest among people there.

Griffin said, “And they would like to come here to apply for jobs and friends and family in Springfield want to come here to the casino. They don’t want to go to Indiana or West Virginia.”

Issue 2 will appear on the statewide ballot in May. So far, there is no opposition against the issue.
