Copper Thieves Strike Again In Clark Co.

For the second time in as many weeks, thieves stole copper from a Clark County site.

Monday, a worker found a hole cut in the fence surrounding a cell phone tower on North Limestone Street in Springfield.

Springfield Police said someone stole more than 150 feet of copper wire found in the buildings and on the tower. The copper was estimated to only cost $50.

Verizon Wireless owns the tower. Spokesperson Laura Merritt said the company will work with police to catch the thieves.

Merritt said the thieves could have caused a lot of headaches for people other than the company.

She said, "If somebody vandalizes our tower, our customers can experience interruption of their wireless devices."

Verizon officials don't know if that happened in Springfield. Merritt said workers are installing surveillance cameras at many of their locations to prevent future thefts.

Last week, someone broke into an Ohio Edison substation and stole copper wire attached to the equipment.
