Flames Destroy Dayton Home

Investigators are working to determine what caused a massive fire in Dayton Saturday night.

Amir Elliot said, "The flames were shooting up the roof and smoke was going up across the street."

Six fire departments responded to the blaze on Oakridge Drive. Hundreds of people filled sidewalks to watch firefighters battle the blaze.

Smoke and flames could be seen for several blocks. The neighborhood was covered with a thick haze for several hours after the fire.

No one was injured and the house was vacant.

Neighbors said it's the second time the home burned in the last year. Ken Arnold owns the home next to the vacant house.

He said, "This is ridiculous, these abandoned properties, they need to do something about them. I'm going to have another problem with my house again, and I'll probably have to file another insurance claim."

Arnold wants Dayton city leaders to redouble their efforts to demolish vacant homes, especially those already damaged.

He said, "Most people around here take care of our homes. You shouldn't have neighborhood blight like that and it not being addressed."

Montgomery County was awarded a $29 million grant in January to demolish more than 1,600 vacant homes.
