Shots Fired During Attemped Home Invasion

Police in Miami Township said two men tried to force their way into a local apartment.

Officers said the men first kicked in the door and when the man who lives there surprised them and slammed it in their face, they opened fire.

The home invasion happened at an apartment on Alex Bell Pike early Monday morning.

Sgt. Paul Nienhause said, “We had a resident sitting in an apartment when someone tried to kick the door in.”

Police said the door opened and the resident went to see who was there and that is when he told police he saw two black men and described one of them as heavy set.

Nienhaus said, “They appeared to be surprised when they saw him. He slammed to door on them.”

Officers said the next thing the resident heard was several loud popping sounds.

“They did fire three, possibly four shots into the front door and wall next door before running away,” Nienhaus said.

Police said they believe that the men had a getaway car sitting nearby. A K-9 unit was called in, but lost the men’s track.

Officers said most of the bullets hit the man’s front door, but one of them made it into his living room. They said he was not injured, but just shaken up.

So far, the victim said he does not know who the men were. He also told police that he has no idea who would be angry enough at him to shoot him.

The resident said that he has only lived in the apartment for a month.
