DAYTON, Ohio -- We know the identity of a man found dead in a vacant field off Shoop Avenue in Dayton.
Early Wednesday morning the Montgomery County Coroner's Office got a call which helped them make a positive identification.
The coroner's office received a call around 4 a.m. from a woman and a man asking about the white male found Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities were able to confirm the man's identity through clothing and tattoo descriptions given by the callers who turned out to be the deceased's wife and father, according to the coroner's office.
The man found near a fence line in a vacant field has been identified as 33-year-old Jeff Thomas of Monroe, Ohio.
Police say his body was bloody and partially concealed by brush, but their were no obvious signs of trauma.
Police discovered Jeff Thomas body after receiving an anonymous phone call.
After a brief search of the area uncovered a knife in the grass and a gun in a nearby garage, homicide detectives became suspicious.
Police are hoping to make sense of the case once an afternoon autopsy is performed, but until then, police say it is still a mystery as to how and why Jeff Thomas died.
The autopsy should reveal at least a preliminary cause of death and whether this was suicide or foul play.
