Teen Bullying On The Rise

The National Crime Prevention Council reports that 80 percent of urban junior and senior high school students miss one day of class a month, out of fear of bullies.

As NewsCenter 7 reported on Thursday, a Brookville mother claimed her son took a gun to school because he was being bullied.

However, police said if you are being bullied, taking a gun to school is not the answer. They said there are many people kids can turn to: from teachers and principals, to resource officers in schools. But, they said everything starts at home.

John Dipietro, of the Miami Township police said, "You really need to talk with children and they have to have the confidence to react and say, 'no, I'm not going to be intimidated,' that's how bullies work."

Prosecutors said Freeders didn't just plan on shooting a classmate, but had a list of school administrators as well. He is now behind bars facing serious charges.

Miami Township police said they have pamphlets for parents to pick up, outlining the problem of bullying. It is called Power Tripping and it has good ideas about how to prevent a child from being bullied.
