Serial Shooter Halts Highway Trash Pickup

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Officials announced Tuesday that trash pick-up has been halted along two Central Ohio highways because of the highway serial shooter. The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio made the decision several weeks ago when a driver was hit by a bullet at the Lambert Road overpass.A county landfill used in trash pick-up is located in southern Franklin County, an area targeted by the serial shooter.SWACO workers were rerouted from working on Interstate 270 between Georgesville Road and High Street, and on Interstate 71 between Frank Road and Grove City.Since August, SWACO budgeted five to six workers who clean up trash.Officials claim that due to the number of trucks using the landfill, neighbors were complaining about the amount of trash.Despite pulling employees, SWACO officials insist trash is not piling up because Ohio Department of Transportation workers are assisting in the clean up.Officials recognize that while the serial shooter should not dictate how SWACO operates, pulling workers was a smart decision. A SWACO representative said clean up crews will return to work when the serial shooter is arrested and shootings have stopped.City authorities are developing other possible solutions to avoid placing employees in danger. One such proposal involves having county prisoners pick up trash along highways.
