Billboard Asks For Serial Shooting Tips

Posted: 3:34 pm EST March 4, 2004

A Columbus advertising company is trying to help catch the area's serial shooter by placing information on billboards.

Lamar Outdoor Advertising is using three billboards in Franklin County to encourage people with information about the shooter to call the tip line.

The company said the serial shooting task force did not ask for the signs. Company officials said they thought of the idea to donate the billboards.

"We want to get more involved with the community," said Lamar's Michael Smith. "We wanted to keep it out (in the public) any way we could. Obviously we love and work here, and want to do the best thing we can to benefit anyone so we can get rid of the problem."

Smith said the billboards will remain up until the shooter is caught.

If someone buys the location, Smith said the company will pick another board so three always will display the tip line.

Truck Investigated

A truck driver thought he might have been the latest victim of the serial shooter Monday afternoon when he heard something hit his windshield while driving on Interstate 71 in Delaware County.

Law enforcement officers investigated the incident and said the object that hit the windshield likely was a rock and not a bullet. The windshield did not shatter.

Twenty-four shootings have been linked to the serial shooter, including one that killed a woman on Interstate 270 in November.

Nine of the attacks have been linked to the same weapon that killed Gail Knisley on Nov. 25.

The task force said witnesses saw a white male about 30 to 40 years who was of average height and weight. He had dark hair and a dark hat and wore dark sunglasses. They described his vehicle as a small to mid-size dark-colored sedan. The vehicle was possibly a Chevrolet Geo Metro.

A reward for information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the shooter or shooters responsible for Knisley's death stands at $60,000.

Anyone with information is asked to call (614) 462-4646.
