DAYTON, Ohio -- Dayton is creating a wireless environment that will allow people in certain areas access to the Internet at no cost. City leaders said all a person needs is a portable computer or related devices.

Dayton is going to be the first city to provide this new technology at no cost to the city and no cost to the user. The city is teaming up with the Harborlink Network.

The new service will be paid through advertising.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, city leaders were excited to announce the new Wi-Fi service. The new service will be available in a one square mile radius of downtown, including the Oregon District, RiverScape, Fifth-Third Field, Webster Station and Tech Town.

Officials said anyone with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop, PDA or telephone will be able to log onto the free Internet service.

People said access to the Internet is the only way to keep in contact with far away friends or to finds jobs.

If this pilot program is successful, city leaders hope to expand it all cross the city.
