Jury Selection Begins In Barton Murder Trial

LEBANON, Ohio -- The trial began Monday for a former police officer accused of playing a role in the murder of his wife. Vickie Barton was killed in 1995 and her husband, Jim, was not charged until last year.
Jim Barton is a former Springboro police lieutenant and has been charged with taking part in his wife's death. However, since the beginning, he has maintained his innocence.Vickie Barton was killed in April of 1995. Police said she was beaten, sexually assaulted and shot. Her husband, Jim, said he found her body in their Franklin Township home and called for help.In an interview last year with NewsCenter 7, Barton said he was devastated by her death. He said she was a wonderful person and his best friend.Authorities said no one was charged in Vickie's death for years. They said a cold case squad picked up the case and last spring Jim Barton was indicted with complicity of involuntary manslaughter, complicity to aggravated burglary and complicity to burglary.Investigators blame the actual murder on another man who committed suicide four months after Vickie Barton's death. Barton maintains that he did not play a role in his wife's death.On Monday, Barton sat quietly in court while his jury was selected. Sixty potential jurors were summoned and were asked a lot of questions by both defense attorneys and prosecutors.Opening statements are expected on Tuesday morning. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
