A jury returned a verdict in the murder trial of a former Springboro police officer who had been charged with playing a role in his wife's death.

Friday evening, the jury found Jim Barton guilty on charges including involuntary manslaughter and aggravated burglary.

The jury had began deliberating Thursday afternoon.

After six hours of deliberations, they quit for the night and then resumed deliberations Friday morning.

Prosecutors said Jim Barton hired someone to burglarize his Franklin Township home in April 1995. They said the burglary led to Vickie Bartons death. Barton was charged with involuntary manslaughter, complicity to aggravated burglary and complicity to burglary.

Closing statements in Bartons murder trial began Thursday morning when the prosecution and the defense spoke to the jury. Closing statements were delayed a bit Thursday morning when both sides had to go over evidence with the judge.

Prosecutors said Barton hired a man by the name of Will Phelps to burglarize the home. Investigators said Barton thought the burglary would scare his wife and she would move to Springboro, where he reportedly wanted to become police chief. Authorities said five months after Vickie's death, Phelps killed himself.

According to investigators, Phelps and an unknown person sexually assaulted Vickie Barton and then killed her.

Barton has maintained his innocence throughout the entire investigation and trial. Defense attorneys said that Barton and his wife were happily married and that Barton had nothing to do with his wife's murder.

Sentencing will happen at a later date.
