Police Chief Julian Davis said that Blake and his wife were the only two people inside the house at the time of the shooting. He said homicide investigators will take that information to prosecutors and then let them decide whether charges will be filed. During the news conference, Davis stopped short of calling Blake a suspect in the shooting.

Investigators said Michael Blake called a non-emergency police dispatch number after the shooting. Blake was taken into custody and questioned at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. However, he was later released without being arrested or booked, which is against department protocol.

Niema Blake was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she later died from multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives have not determined if Michael Blake was the aggressor or if the shooting was in self-defense.

Niema Thompson-Blake’s family believes that she was a victim of violence again. Niema’s mother said that there have been instances in the past of domestic abuse. However, according to police reports, there have been no reports of any domestic violence between the couple.

Blake has been put on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
