Prosecutors Deny Criminal Charges Against Officer

A Dayton police officer said he shot his wife in self-defense as she charged at him with a butcher knife.

On Tuesday, prosecutors denied criminal charges against the officer, at least for now. However, prosecutors said they plan to take a second look at the case. Prosecutors said they want more detailed information about the shooting before they proceed any further.

Investigators said Officer Michael Blake, shot 31-year-old Niema Blake during a domestic dispute on Saturday inside the North Euclid Street home.

On Saturday, officers handcuffed Blake and took him into custody for questioning after he called a police dispatch number and said he had shot his wife. According to the call that Blake made, he shot his wife in self-defense.

On Monday, investigators were unable to determine if Blake was the aggressor in the dispute, which prompted police to release him.

Investigators said Blake is cooperating with the investigation. They also said he is on paid administrative leave, while the investigation continues.

Blake, along with his attorney said they are confident no criminal charges will be filed.

According to police reports, in 1995, Niema Thompson-Blake was convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence for stabbing a former boyfriend. Police reports also showed that in 1999, Michael Blake was arrested for domestic violence against his former wife.
