Authorities said I-70 was shut down between Route 54 in Clark County and Route 42 in Madison County. Troopers said several homes near the accident scene were evacuated as a precaution, but have now been allowed to return.

A dispatcher with the OSP said workers are having to transfer 41,000 pounds of blasting caps and dynamite from the truck by hand. The OSP said it could take until rush hour to reopen the interstate.

Troopers have been rerouting traffic onto Route 54 to detour around the accident scene. At one point, authorities said traffic was backed up for 25 miles.

According to troopers, the driver of the semi suffered minor injuries. Authorities said the driver of the semi fell asleep, which led to the accident.
