Lightning Strikes Construction Worker In Warren Co.

Thursday, June 30, 2005 – updated: 5:26 pm EDT June 30, 2005

A construction worker was hit by lightning during Thursday afternoon's storms. It happened as he was helping to build a new elementary school in Clearcreek Township in Warren County.

Authorities said the 51-year-old man was working on a new school in the Springboro School District when he was struck. They said the afternoon storms moved in so the construction crew quit working.

Once the storm moved on and the sun came out, the construction crew went back to work. Authorities said at that time, lightning struck a piece of machinery that the man was operating.

They said he managed to make it into his work trailer, but was unable to speak. Several other men at the scene knew what happened and immediately called 911.

The man was taken by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.

Authorities said a 19-year-old who was working about 20 feet from the lightning strike felt the effects of the bolt, but suffered no injuries.
