Trip To Grocery Store Leads To Purse-Snatching

Two elderly women came face to face with a purse snatcher on Friday. Authorities said the suspect grabbed one of the women's purses, while the other one decided to fight back.

Two sisters, one visiting from Florida, went to the Aldi's store in the Eastown Shopping Center on Friday to do some grocery shopping. However, a purse snatcher had other plans for the pair.

Nancy Massey said she took her purse out of the cart and then a man grabbed it. Massey's sister, Christine Deaton, said she took her umbrella and began hitting the man with it.

The man took off in a white car that was parked close by. Police said the car was stolen earlier in the day. However, what the man did not know was that a citizen was following close by.

The citizen helped police track the car to the other side of the city. The stolen car and purse were in a driveway of a home on East Bruce.

Officers tackled the man they thought was the Eastown purse snatcher. Police brought Massey and her sister to the home on East Bruce to identify the suspect, but Massey said she did not think the man was the right person.

Massey and her sister said an African-American man grabbed the purse. Police said the man likely traded the car and purse for drugs at an apartment building close by.

Officers said Massey was glad to have her purse back, minus her cash.

Police said they are still investigating the crime. The man that was arrested on Friday is expected to be charged with receiving stolen property and perhaps resisting arrest.

Officers continue to search for the African-American male believed to have originally taken the purse.
