Suspect Sought In UDF Smash And Grab

Friday, July 22, 2005 – updated: 10:31 am EDT July 22, 2005

Police are looking for a man who did not want to pay for cigarettes and took off with cash. Authorities said a thief broke into the United Dairy Farmers on Linden Avenue in Riverside early Friday morning.

They said the man reportedly threw a rock through the window of the UDF and now he is on the run. Officers said the man got away with thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes, cash and coupons.

Authorities said the man then got into a high-powered Chevrolet Camaro and sped away onto westbound Route 35. Police said officers were called to Route 35 and Woodman, where the suspect apparently lost control of his car and crashed, leaving the car stranded.

Officers said minutes later, a red Oldsmobile slammed into the man’s getaway car. Police found cartons of cigarettes thrown all over the road.

Witnesses said the man fled on foot in an unknown direction. Police said the driver of the red car was not seriously injured.
