6 Die In Indiana House Fire

Six members of the same family were killed in a fire early Saturday morning at their home in rural Martin County, Ind.

The blaze was reported at about 4 a.m. Saturday, according to RTV6 in Indianapolis. Investigators said it appears that the family had little chance of escaping. Relatives identified the victims as Rodney and Beth Montgomery and their four children, Austin, Ariana, Trent and Jackson.

What remained of the home continued to smolder 12 hours after the fire. Investigators don't yet know what caused the blaze, but the devastation was obvious, the station reported.

There was not much left of the single-story wooden home, but toys were strewn across the yard -- evidence that children once played there.

"They were just a real good family -- a happy family and well-respected," said Dortha Collins, a relative of the victims.

Investigators said the parents and an infant were found near a door, apparently trying to escape. The other three children were found in a bedroom. All seemed to be overcome by smoke, investigators said.

Authorities do not suspect foul play and are focusing their attention on a wood-burning stove.

Rodney Montgomery's father, Stanley, said the family was very religious. Stanley Montgomery said Rodney worked as an electrical engineer at the Crane Naval Warfare Center and was also a Sunday school teacher and church secretary. He said Rodney bought cemetery plots for the entire family about a month ago.

"We just miss them so badly -- don't know how we're going to make it without them. We have no word for it. We feel that God's hand was in it," Montgomery said. "At the time, we didn't think anything about it, but when we look back at it, we feel that it was from God to let us know that it was in his plan."

Authorities planned to officially release the names of the family members Sunday. Officials said the victims were burned so badly that they are using dental records to make positive identifications.

Autopsies were planned Sunday to determine the exact cause of death.
