Woman Burned; Man Arrested In Connection With Crime

Monday, March 20, 2006 – updated: 11:44 am EST March 20, 2006

Authorities said a woman sitting in a vehicle with a man suddenly catches fire, jumps out and starts rolling on the ground.

The woman is now in intensive care at a local hospital, and the man is behind bars at the Montgomery County Jail.

Police said the woman who caught fire was identified by friends as 28-year-old Nikki Witt. Witt’s friends said that she is married and that the fire happened as she sat in an SUV in an alley with a man they said was her boyfriend.

Investigators do not believe Witt’s injuries were an accident.

Officers had the SUV towed to the crime lab for possible clues. They believe the SUV is a crime scene.

Police said their investigation began after 911 calls reported a woman being on fire.

A neighbor said she and her boyfriend and Witt and her boyfriend had been hanging out together when Witt and her boyfriend began arguing. The neighbor said she asked Witt and her boyfriend to take the argument outside.

The woman said she saw the two get into the man’s vehicle, where a can of gasoline is often stored. Moments later, the woman said her friend was in flames.

The woman said Witt had no hair and that skin was hanging off her body.

Police said they believe gas somehow got on Witt. They think the man then lit a cigarette. Officers do not know all of the circumstances.

Officers arrested the man, who is 27 years old. They said the last reports of Witt indicated she was burned over two-thirds of her body and is in intensive care at Miami Valley Hospital.

Friends said Witt is the mother of three children and that her husband is with her at the hospital.
