Local Lawmaker Proposes New Law For Sex Offenders

Keeping an eye on convicted sex offenders who are now back on the streets has become a huge concern to many parents in recent years.

Now, parents may soon get a lot of help from a new law that has been proposed by State Sen. Steve Austria of Beavercreek. He is proposing the use of satellite tracking from paroled offenders.

Statistics show that sexual predators or sexually-oriented offenders are more likely to repeat their crimes than other types of paroled criminals.

In Montgomery County, there are almost 800 sex offenders on the sheriff’s Web site. It lists what they’ve done and where they are supposedly to live, but that is not good enough for Austria.

He said Ohio must do better to keep violent sex offenders from getting a chance to victimize children again.

Austria is proposing a law that imposes mandatory sentences of 25 years to life for raping a child under the age of 13. And, if an offender is paroled a judge can impose ankle and waist bracelets as part of the release.

The devices would feed information to satellites that could track a parolee’s location 24 hours a day.

Austria’s goal is to make the streets of every neighborhood safer for children. He said he hopes his proposal will pass the house and be signed into law this summer.
