DAYTON, Ohio -- On Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration has announced that flight delays will grow worse in the coming months as airlines are flying fewer domestic routes.NewsCenter 7’s Scott MacFarlane said the FAA said it will be more difficult, if not impossible, for some passengers to rebook their flights.Flights from Dayton International will take off an average of 22 minutes after the scheduled depart time. Official said one of every seven will be delayed even longer.Traveler Walda Connell said the good news was that she made it onto her flight from Florida. She said the bad news was that a ticket agent had to wheel her onto the tarmac to get on board the plane, which nearly left without her.Connell said she would have been stuck without another flight for hours. The FAA said this summer’s delays will be the longest in years, especially in bad weather.MacFarlane said, “This is a problem because airports, the runways, ticket counters, even the baggage claim carousels are eerily quiet this summer. Airlines are flying fewer flights, and those that are flying are 85 to 100 percent full, which means travelers will have fewer options if delayed.”Rebooking will be far more difficult. An FAA administrator said, in some cases, there will be no backup options that day for passengers.Airlines are recommending that travelers fly earlier in the morning. They said to bring some food and pack lighter, because of less overhead space, and less chance of losing a bag.Airlines said fewer flights and fuller flights help keep costs down.MacFarlane said airlines have eliminated 153,00 jobs in recent years, and in some case, they have eliminated flights, too.
