Wastebusters: Anti-Tax Group Targets Government Spending

Posted: 4:05 pm EDT July 18, 2006

An anti-tax group in Ohio is targeting runaway government spending. They are hoping to get the attention of local taxpayers.

Watchdog groups at the statehouse focus on good government, while others focus on the environment, but even fewer groups focus on state spending.

Now one of the groups is targeting all of the tax money that flows through the statehouse.

Log onto www.buckeyeinstitute.org and you will see the first ever running account of state spending. It’s called the Spend-O-Meter and runs 24/7 calculating how much of your tax money is being spent.

The group said they put up the website to draw attention to all your tax money that lawmakers spend, and its billions of dollars.

Where does it go? Most of it goes to health and human services. Other big expenditures are schools and state-owned colleges.

State prisons have also become a big billion-dollar business. Up next, Buckeye Institute plans to release a detailed report on wasteful spending later this summer.

The report called the Ohio Pig Book is expected sometime in August.
