Roto-Rooter plans to spend as much as $5.5 million on a 31,000-square-foot office, training and service complex northwest of the Austin Boulevard interchange of Interstate 75.

About 90 employees, including 80 plumbers or technicians, would work from the facility. The 90 employees would include 10 to 25 new workers, spokesman Paul Abrams said Monday.

The building, just outside Miamisburg in Miami Twp., would be the first built from a prototype of new regional service centers for the Cincinnati-based company.

“It’s the first of its kind,” Abrams said. “We hope to open it by January 2014.”

The Miami Twp. Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing on the project at 7 p.m. tonight at the Miami Twp. administrative offices, 2700 Lyons Blvd., south of Dayton Mall.

The seven-acre development is planned on 24 acres just south of a Planes Moving and Storage location, east of Byers Road and west of I-75 in Miami Twp.

The building is expected to cost $3.5 million, while the company estimated land costs and options proposed by the architect to add up to $2 million, Abrams said.

The facility would replace a regional center at 2549 Stanley Ave. in Dayton where Roto-Rooter handled calls for an 11-county service area. This office has already moved to a temporary location on Dryden Road in Moraine.

The new complex, off Byers Road, south of Benner Road, would face I-75, south of the Dayton Mall and north of the new Motoman Robotics facility, just northwest of the Austin interchange.

Roto-Rooter was started in 1935 by the Blanc family in Des Moines, Iowa, and acquired in 1980 by Chemed Corp. The company is now headquartered one floor below Chemed in the First Financial Center in Cincinnati.
