HAMILTON —

The identity of a Hamilton man killed in a Thanksgiving Day fire has been released.

Christopher J. Tobergte, 37, of 724 Pine St. was pronounced dead around 11 a.m. Nov. 22 after firefighters responded about 9:30 a.m. to a fully involved house fire.

Deputy Chief Jeff Shaw said neighbors called in the structure fire, and were attempting to help the man escape when fire crews arrived.

“The house was fully involved. There was fire coming from every window on the front, back and side,” Shaw said. “From the floor to the ceiling, front to the back, the fire was going.”

Tobergte’s primary cause of death was smoke inhalation, and the death has been ruled accidental, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office. Firefighters found the man near the front door, officials said. He was the only occupant.

Shaw said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.

Pat Bush, whose daughter Lori Wesley lives nearby, said they were in Wesley’s kitchen when they heard the man beating on his front door. Bush and Wesley went over to attempt to help him. Another neighbor was already trying to open the rear door but was unsuccessful.

“Bless his heart, he was a good guy,” Bush said.
