A 21-year-old, who was a 2009 Centerville grad, has died of his injuries suffered in a house fire on New Year’s Day.

Family members said Chad Kohls died at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to media reports coming out of Cincinnati.

The family released a statement: “Chad had a huge heart. He was a wonderful person who loved people loved us and we loved him very much in return. We appreciate all the prayers and support and ask that the media please honor our request for privacy at this time to allow us to grieve with our loved ones. Thank you.”

Chad was injured in a fire along with two other people on Thursday.

The fire broke out at a home in the 2800 block of Digby Avenue about 7 a.m. The fire was ruled to be accidental, caused by a space heater placed too closed to bedding, according to the Cincinnati Fire Division.

Fire crews had to rescue several people from the home.

Chad’s mother, in a brief conversation late last week with News Center 7’s Kate Bartley, said her son lived with as many as six other young men in the house where the fire occurred.

She said her son was a marketing major, wanted to work in advertising and was currently doing an internship with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Chad loved everything about the outdoors, she said: fishing, hunting and camping.

Another local person injured in that fire, 20-year-old Ellen Garner, a 2010 graduate of Tippecanoe High School, was said to still be in University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition.

Garner majors in design and was into costuming when she was in high school, making costumes for many of the school plays and musicals.

She had completed an internship in New York City last year, where she worked at Garan Inc., as a design intern for the infant/toddler girls Garanimals division, according to her profile on linkedin.
