2 Arrested After 9-Hour Standoff

By Mark Bruce

DAYTON, Ohio —

Two people are in custody after a 9-hour standoff with Dayton Police.

James Gilmore and Thad Joshua Daubenmire are in the Montgomery County Jail, charged in connection with the incident.

Police responded to East Second Street just before before Midnight Friday when a neighbor called 911 to report two men crawling into a house.

Major Mark Hess from the Dayton Police Department said, "It was a good neighbor who was keeping an eye out and saw something suspicious and didn't know what it was."

Police arrived within minutes and those officers as well as several neighbors heard gunshots.

So Police called the Dayton SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Teams.

Hess said, "We tried to make contact using a bullhorn. Then we used some distraction devices to try to get attention or come out but they refused each time.:

So SWAT started to fire dozens of tear gas canisters into the home, shattering windows and walls.

The home filled with smoke and eventually forced one man, Gilmore out.

As officers waited for Daubenmire, they noticed more smoke.

Hess said, "For a short period of time we worried there might be a fire. So we had the fire department come out and put water in basement and that's when the second suspect contacted us."

Daubenmire surrendered after 9 a.m. ending a nearly 10-hour standoff.

Neighbor Dainil Dearth said, "I'm happy. There aren't any houses burning down. Nobody got shot. No ambulances came out to take dead bodies away."

Anita Trapp said, "They got them out and nobody was hurt. I'm just glad it's over."

Robbery detectives are investigating the case. Police aren't releasing the suspects names.

No one was injured. The homeowner wasn't home at the time.
