By Mike Campbell

DAYTON, Ohio —

Police in Dayton said they uncovered a significant marijuana-growing operation when they were called to a house to investigate a possible break-in.

Officers went to the 600 block of Corwin Street in East Dayton about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

According to officers, they were called to the residence when somone living in the neighborhood thought a home might have been burglarized.

Officers said they went to the back of the home and found signs of a possible recent break-in. The officers then heard noises from inside the house and decide to go in.

They found two people inside the home and identified a strong odor of marijuana. The officers secured the two men and then stopped to wait for a search warrant for the house.

Officers obtained the search warrant about 4:30 a.m. and again began going through the home.

According to police, they discovered about 100 marijauna plants, many of them mature, along with electric growing lights and ventilation fans, everything police said would be needed for a grow and sell operation.

Sgt. Mark Ponichtera said, "It's troubling because it's a residential neighborhood, there are three schools within the general area, it's quite obvious the people here have no regard fro the safety and well-being of children in the area here."

Police said they arrested 35-year-old Joseph Wendling and 39-year-old Matt Goodwin. The two were arrested for illegal manufacturing of drugs and possesing criminal tools.

Officers will talk with Montgomery County prosecutors about official charges against them.
