BEAVERCREEK —

A wreck of heavy-duty pickup trucks Friday evening left a 76-year-old Kettering man dead and a 22-year-old Indiana man suffering from incapacitating injuries.

Earl L. Bowling was killed on U.S. 35 at Trebein Road when he failed to yield to an oncoming truck as he was turning left from U.S. 35 onto northbound Trebein, said Sgt. Andrew Worcester, with the Ohio Highway Patrol post in Xenia.

Grant A. Gossard, of Sheridan, Ind., was driving a 2000 Ford F-250 west on U.S. 35 and couldn't avoid the nearly head-on collision with Bowling's 2005 Ford F-150, Worcester said.

Both were taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where Bowling died and Gossard voluntarily gave a blood sample to authorities, Worcester said. The test results from the blood samples of both men won't be immediately available, which means the incident remains under investigation, Worcester said.

Bowling was wearing a seatbelt but Gossard was not, Worcester said, but neither man was ejected or trapped in the wreckage.

Rescue crews were sent to the area at about 5:40 p.m. on a report of a multivehicle accident. The wreck shut down traffic along U.S. West until about 9 p.m.

Sgt. Jake Pyles, also with the post at Xenia, said at the scene that one of the trucks laid down long skid marks in an effort to avoid the impact. From the preliminary investigation, the vehicle that laid down the skid marks would have been Gossard's.
