2 Shot, 1 Killed In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

One person is dead and another injured after a shooting early Saturday morning in Springfield.

An argument escalated near the Knights of Pythias Club on Yellow Springs Street just hours after another member of the private club was wheeled out on a stretcher.

Neighbors said they heard the gunshots erupt from the club which police said is a relatively calm, social place which tries to keep the violence down.

Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody said people in the club were trying to get a man to leave around 1:30 a.m. Shortly after, there was a confrontation between an individual and someone else at the doorway when a man produced a gun and started firing.

Moody said when officers arrived they found two individuals down in the club, both wounded by gunfire.

Police said the suspect shot and killed 35-year-old William Lewis, hitting him in the neck and arm. The shooter then followed another victim outside to shoot him again.

The shooting is still being investigating by the police who said the K of P Club is not one of their usual trouble spots.

“This club works with us in the community to try to talk about problems they have,” Moody said. “They try to be vigilant about keeping problems down and they were trying to be vigilant today.”
