2nd drive thru in 2 days robbed at gunpoint

By Breaking News Staff

SPRINGFIELD —

An armed robber targeted John’s Drive Thru Sunday night, marking the second armed robbery of a drive thru in as many days.

Officers said a white man around 35-45 years old robbed the business in the 800 block of West Main Street around 7:30 p.m. Video surveillance indicated the suspect was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, light blue jeans with some tears, black work boots, a black mask on the bottom of his face and a white scarf or tshirt covering his hair, according to police.

According to police reports the suspect pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the female clerk of the business and demanded cash and cigarettes. The clerk gave the suspect a change drawer, which the man threw to the ground, the report said. Police said the clerk then opened the register and the man took an undetermined amount of cash. He then fled the store and grabbed several packs of cigarettes upon leaving, police said.

During the robbery the suspect also searched the clerk’s personal coat and purse, police said.

Authorities said the clerk recognized the man from a previous drive thru robbery and pressed the store’s panic alarm.

On Saturday night around 8 p.m. a man with a similar description robbed Sunny Drive Thru, 915 N. Belmont Avenue, and got away with cash and cigarettes.

It’s unclear at this time if the two robberies are connected.
