DAYTON, Ohio —
Southdale Avenue in Kettering flooded after a water main break on Sunday afternoon. Experts said it's a reminder that homeowners need to weather-proof their homes before temperatures drop this week.
"The pipes freeze if they're not properly installed. Some of [the problems] might be building issues. Older buildings have cracks, or they're just not properly insulated," Pester Plumbing owner Brian Pester said.
Here are some tips: * Check all of the caulking and spray foam on your pipes. * Make sure your garden hose is disconnected, or it can freeze and break in the cold. * Try opening your cabinets if you live in an older home. It can help heat circulate and prevent pipes from freezing. * Even when you go on vacation, you should keep the heat in your house set at a minimum of 55 degrees.
