Authorities Investigate Discovery Of Military Weapons

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio —

It is a day three for authorities in Miami Township as they continue to deal with military ammunition inside a burned-out home.

Now, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm agents arrived and they are investigating whether there was anything illegal inside the home on Mohawk Trial.

Investigators started looking for the cause of a fire at the home on Wednesday when they discovered a huge supply of mortar shells, bazooka rounds and live ammunition. Now, authorities are finding guns inside the charred home.

Authorities said the house caught on fire on Tuesday and returned on Wednesday to begin their investigation into what sparked the blaze.

The discovery of the military arsenal led authorities to contact the Dayton Bomb Squad to evaluate the situation. Authorities then conducted an evacuation of neighboring homes as a precaution.

The owner of the home told NewsCenter 7 that he has had the ammunition for 40 or 50 years and believed that they were not armed. He said he thought they were just empty containers.

The owner said he wanted to get rid of items, but couldn't find anyone to buy them, so his collection just continued to increase over the years.

The Dayton Bomb Squad then requested for the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Bomb Squad to come in and take over. During Dayton's evaluation of the situation, they discovered more live weapons than first thought.

Wright-Patt's Bomb Squad arrived Thursday morning to help get rid of the armed weapons. They are expected to take the weapons somewhere else to detonate them.

Authorities said residents who were asked to evacuate were allowed to return to their homes on Wednesday night, but were told to stay inside and not go near the scene.

At this time, it is unclear if charges will be filed against the homeowner.
