Auto Safety Groups Support New Rental Car Bill

WASHINGTON —

Auto safety groups said Americans should not have to play Russian Roulette with rental cars.

They are supporting a new U.S. Senate Bill that would protect you from renting cars that had been recalled for safety reason.

The bill was prompted by the deaths of two California sisters who were killed in a crash involving a rental car under a safety recall.

A federal study recently found rental companies fix only about half of the recalled vehicles within a year.

Clarence Ditlow with the Center for Auto Safety said, "The consumers are paying their hard earned dollar what they think is a safe, reliable vehicle, and what they are getting is a potential death trap because there is a recall on it."

The American Car Rental Association is fighting the bill. It recently proposed a system that allows agencies to decide for themselves the seriousness of a recall.
