DAYTON —
More than 20 people were inside a home on the campus of the University of Dayton early Saturday morning, when smoke began filling the residence.
Smoke began pouring from the basement area around 12:30 a.m. and when firefighters arrived to the house, 423 Stonemill Rd., they discovered a large fire in the basement, according to Dayton District Fire Chief Rennes Bowers.
“It had burned almost completely through the floor and up part of the wall and into the kitchen,” Bowers said.
The basement was a locked basement, meaning no one had access to it, according to Bowers.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly and the chief said quick action of the people inside likely prevented a more serious outcome.
“We’ve had fires at UD before, but not for a while,” Bowers said. “So it’s very fortunate this one was discovered early, because it had the potential to burn this place down.”
No injuries were reported and Bowers said damage estimates are around 5 to 10 thousand dollars.
An investigator was called to the scene to help determine an official cause of the fire.
