Beavercreek Apartment Building Evacuated

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio —

Residents of one building at the Stonebridge Apartments had an early wake-up call Wednesday morning when smoke filled the building.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 2:30 a.m. on Stonecastle Drive off Stroop Road in Beavercreek after someone in the building smelled smoke.

Fire crews arrived at the scene and could see smoke filling the three-story structure and then went door to door getting residents out of the building.

Eddie Sanders said, "We heard people pounding on the doors, next thing I know there's a fireman with a bright light in my face telling us we gotta get out, the place is on fire."

Kelly Rodseth said, "It was strong, the odor, you could tell it was really smoky."

Firefighters worked quickly and determined that the smoke was coming from a burned-out transformer in an electrical room of the building. However, they said there were no flames.

Residents could not go back in even after the smoke cleared because power had been knocked out. Dayton Power and Light crews arrived and reconfigured the power system to provide electricity to the building.

Firefighters gave the all-clear about two hours after the evacuation, at 4:30 a.m.

Power was also knocked out to the building, but was restored by Dayton Power and Light once firefighters gave the all-clear for residents to return to the homes about two hours after being evacuated.

No one was injured.
