Bees Attack Springfield Students; Four Treated For Stings

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

Bees attacked more than two dozen Clark County students, sending four to a local hospital.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at Hustead Elementary in Springfield during a class picture in front of the school. Officials said one student was stung 18 times, but the children are expected to be OK.

Officials said bees and lots of them swarmed out of a hole as a fourth-grade class was taking a picture in front of a sign at the school.

Alex Peabody was one of at least 30 students who were stung as they ran inside the school. Alex suffered two stings on his neck, plus several other areas.

He was one of four students who were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Springfield for treatment.

Officials at Hustead Elementary contacted parents. They said one student was stung 18 times, but they said there were no allergic reactions.

Doctors ordered students to keep ice on the bee stings.

School officials said the grounds were treated and inspected for nests before school started, but this particular nest was not noticed. The school said it will bring in pest controllers to make sure the bees are gone.
