Bitter Cold Brings In Extra Cash

CENTERVILLE, Ohio —

Sub-zero temperatures are expected to roll into the Miami Valley on Friday night.

Watson’s in Centerville boasted an increase in sales of fireplaces this time of year because of the frigid weather.

Matt Snyder, of Watson’s, said their vent-free gas fireplace sales are up 100 percent since this time last year.

"The colder it gets, the hotter fireplace sales become," said Snyder.

In these temperatures, doctors warn that people need to dress in layers and take frequent breaks from the cold in order to prevent hypothermia and frostbite.

They said it is important to cover the extremities, such as the fingers, toes and nose, since they are the first to freeze.

Drivers also need to beware of the slick roads, as the melted snow and ice can re-freeze and cause hazardous conditions.
